‘Do not throw your pearls before swine’ - followed by ‘Know the truth…’

‘Do not throw your pearls before swine’, said Jesus, ‘or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.’ This means that it is unwise to reveal spiritual truths to those who are not ready to receive them: they will not know how to use them, and you will be the victim of their lack of understanding. But for those who have prepared themselves over a long period, the knowledge of spiritual truths is a wonderful thing. This is why Jesus also said, ‘Know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ What is more important than being free? And it is truth that has the property of setting us free. Truth has the property of giving freedom, just as love has the property of giving warmth, and wisdom of giving light. Each quality, each virtue, has its own properties, and so truth has the property of setting free, because it is linked to the will, to power.
