Evolving - comparing ourselves to those who have surpassed us

The main thing that prevents people from making progress is their tendency to think that they know it all, that they are as good as they need to be – until of course they experience some mishap. Then the veil falls from their eyes and they realize that they do not know very much after all. At this point, there is at least some hope for them! One of the best ways of continually moving forward is to compare ourselves with those who have surpassed us, for this gives us an incentive to go further. As long as we compare ourselves with mediocre or bad people, we can say that we are a little more advanced, a little better than they are and rest on our laurels. Why try to be better? We are good enough! So many people cease to evolve simply because they fail to compare themselves with and model themselves on those who are more advanced.*
