God - the evolution of his image towards a God of love

Many of people’s conceptions about the Lord need to be reconsidered. The notion of a God who is angry with his people, or of an old man with a long beard busy recording their good and bad deeds and punishing their faults, was perhaps acceptable at one time and under other conditions. But now, frankly, these notions seem ridiculous. No one in their right mind would want anything to do with the life and occupations that have been ascribed to God. Unquestionably, the notion of one single God, introduced by Moses, represented a great step forward in the history of thought. But there came a time when this image of a harsh, merciless God of justice had to be revised in order for human beings themselves to evolve. For how could they learn to show patience, tolerance and kindness towards their fellow human beings if the example before their eyes was of a God forever intransigent and unforgiving? This is why Jesus came: to bring us the teaching of a God of love.*
