God - we can only know him by merging with him

‘And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God’, said Jesus. But we cannot know God all the while we remain outside of him. To understand the immensity, the infinity of God, we must melt into him, lose ourselves in him, merge with him. However, this fusion cannot take place as long as we do not work to purify ourselves. Let’s use an image: take a large drop of mercury, spread it out in tiny droplets on a sheet of paper, and then bring the droplets together again until they form a single drop. I expect you have all done this experiment. Now, drop a few specks of dust onto the scattered drops: whatever you do now to bring them together, they will remain separate. Well, this is what happens with us too. The Lord is all splendour, infinity and immensity, but he is not inaccessible, provided we can rid ourselves of all our impurities, the layers of dust that prevent us from merging with him.
