Gratitude - do not forget to thank the Lord

Someone comes and complains that he is very unhappy. I ask him, ‘Have you given thanks today?’ ‘Given thanks! To whom? What for?’ ‘Can you walk and breathe?’ ‘Yes...’ ‘Have you had something to eat?’ ‘Yes...’ ‘And can you open your mouth to speak?’ ‘Yes...’ ‘Very well then, thank the Lord. There are people who can neither walk, nor eat, nor even open their mouths. You are miserable because it has never occurred to you to give thanks. In order to change your frame of mind, you would first have to realize that nothing is more wonderful than to be alive, able to walk, look and speak.’ But human beings forget all this, which is why heaven puts them through great hardships – to teach them finally to be grateful.*
