‘In the beginning God created heaven and earth’ - commentary

Most of the knowledge human beings have at their disposal confers on them mastery over matter and ensures their success. This is all very well, but, because of the way this knowledge is presented to them, it increasingly distances them from the spirit. This is the cause of most of the imbalances to be found in individuals and in society. The book of Genesis opens with these words: 'In the beginning God created heaven and earth.' This sentence sums up perfectly the philosophy of spirit and matter. Heaven is the soul, the spirit, the splendour of the virtues. Earth is the physical world and all the material activities humans take part in. If the earth was created, it is because it is needed. But Moses, who was a great initiate, named heaven first and then the earth, whereas, as far as most human beings are concerned, earth comes before heaven. And for some, even, there is no heaven at all, only earth; that is why in the end the material world swallows them up. Whether human beings are in balance or out of balance depends on their ability to establish connections in their lives between the spirit and matter.
