Initiates - they put the outer world at the service of the inner world

Initiates do not reject the physical world. They rejoice and marvel at everything, and make use of everything, but they do not delude themselves: they never confuse the ends with the means. They know that what is essential is within human beings themselves, and that the outer world must be at the service of the inner world.* For light is within us; truth and peace are within us; the kingdom of God is within us. It is within ourselves that we must seek these things. All external things are simply the husks, the shadow of reality. In certain circumstances they can be useful and effective, but they are not absolutely real; they are just images that can crumble and disappear. And those who cling to them find not the spirit but matter, not truth but illusion. In every realm of life, you must always try to look further than the form, otherwise your spiritual needs will never be satisfied, and you will be unhappy. Whereas if you are accustomed to seeing the infinite affinities between each form and the divine world, you will go a long way. You must learn to read the book that is lying open before you.
