Like and dislike - instinctive feelings that can mislead us

When two people meet, the judgement they instantly bear upon one another is generally dictated by an instinctive feeling of attraction or repulsion, or of like or dislike if you will. It is not reasoning that first comes into play. And from the moment they find each other to be likeable, immediately, and without properly thinking it through, they create close ties. Reasoning comes afterwards, when they realize they were mistaken. But by then, it’s a little late, and what a hard time they have getting over their disappointment. The same is true of dislike. When, upon first meeting, you take a dislike to someone, you avoid them. Then one day, you discover quite by chance that this person possessed great qualities; but you failed to recognize this soon enough, and you missed out on a relationship that could have brought you a great deal. So, it is better not to rely on these feelings of like and dislike too much. Let observation and reasoning have their say, right from the very beginning.
