Putting one’s house in order - inwardly as well as outwardly

Each activity in daily life contains something for you to reflect upon. For example, you know that you need to devote at least a few minutes each day to keeping your house clean and tidy, or else life would soon become unbearable. Why, then, have you still not understood the need for cleaning and keeping order deep inside yourself, with the same patience, regularity and tenacity? Obviously, if your house has become too dirty, too cluttered or too dilapidated, you are always able to go and live somewhere else. But try moving outside of yourself! So, day in, day out, you must visit your heart of hearts and say, ‘Let’s see, is there anything wrong?’ and don’t leave anything lying around; don’t let the dust accumulate and the rubbish pile up. Otherwise, the day will come when it will be too late to put the situation right. You have to put your house in order every single day, several times a day, that is to say, restore order, purity, peace and harmony within yourself.
