Spiritual life - certain unpleasant effects at first

People sometimes complain, ‘Since I decided to change my way of life and follow a spiritual teaching, I have been miserable.’ But were they really happy before? No, I do not think so. On the face of it, yes, perhaps, because those who never exert themselves are seemingly at peace. All the while, the impurities resulting from a disordered life accumulate within them, and at some point they sense that something is wrong – they become anxious or depressed and fall ill. On the other hand, those who decide to introduce purity and light* into their psychic life may at first experience some unpleasantness from the revolution they have set in motion within themselves, but once this period is over, they find peace, freedom and happiness. This is what we must understand. In the first case, despite a semblance of tranquillity, ruin is already in the making. Those who do not live properly can always say, ‘I feel fine, I’m doing well’, but in reality they are mistaken; it is like a beautiful house whose beams have already been eaten away by worms. It may still be solid for the moment, but one day...
