Taking an honest look at our innermost self - On the surface

On the surface, human beings are well behaved and reasonable—or so it would seem. They abide by certain rules and try to respect the laws governing society. But what goes on in their innermost thoughts and feelings? They pilfer, destroy and kill, and then they wonder why they are unhappy, weak, confused or ill. If they would only pause for a moment and take a good, honest look at themselves, they would be obliged to admit that, at some point or another, they have harboured very negative thoughts and feelings, without realizing that thoughts and feelings are active. That is why they are now in such a pitiful state. It is not only words, gestures and actions that have consequences. Everything that happens deep down inside also has an effect, for there too, we stir up, trigger, set in motion and project certain elements that inevitably produce results—whether good or bad.*
