Watch and pray - be vigilant even when you are asleep

The key, the most important key, is always to be awake – even when you are sleeping! Yes, you must be awake. Why is it said, ‘Watch and pray’? Even spiritual people have not yet understood this. Why must we be vigilant? It is far more pleasant to give in to physical and mental laziness. And this is why – in spite of the universe spread out before them, in spite of the stars and the sun, in spite of all the books and all the great masters who are there to instruct them – human beings do not evolve. They are asleep; they are always asleep. From now on, be vigilant and say to yourself, ‘I must take care not to overburden myself. Whether it be a question of food, thoughts or feelings, I will choose the lightest and most luminous elements to build up my brain, heart and lungs. In this way I will always be active, even while I am asleep.’ Yes, for there is more than one kind of sleep. When we have learned to be vigilant, we can stay awake even while we are asleep. Although we are asleep, we can hear, understand and act on other planes.
