Water - matter on which fire, the spirit, works
The range of forms that water can take in nature - from ice through to steam - gives us an idea of the range of states that both psychic and physical matter pass through - from the very dense to the highly subtle. Fire (spirit) is all-powerful in relation to water (matter), and like water it can also be understood on the different planes - the physical, psychic and spiritual. This is why, in initiation, spiritual work is often represented symbolically as the action of fire on water. Heated by the fire of the spirit, matter acts like water, becoming increasingly pure and subtle. Well then, what can we draw from our knowledge of water and fire for our inner life? Many things, but here is one for now: since fire has total power over water, it is possible to reduce the psychic tumours, which have been formed by our accumulated negative states, by getting our own matter (or water) to change state and become steam by means of the spirit (or fire). Then we will at last feel released and free.
