Just as there are customs on the borders between countries, …

Just as there are customs on the borders between countries, be aware that there are also customs in the spiritual world. The disciple embarking upon the road towards true evolution is like the traveller crossing a border. Because he is carrying all kinds of baggage accumulated over the millennia, he is stopped by customs officers who tell him: ‘My friend, the road is hard and long. These things you have loaded yourself up with are cumbersome, useless and even harmful. You must leave them here.' And they force the disciple to off-load everything that is heavy, dark, and prevents him from vibrating in unison with the purity and light he seeks to reach. Of course he will find this border-crossing difficult and painful, because relinquishment and detachment are always painful. But since he seeks to elevate himself, he must accept the price. If he perseveres he will soon come to another customs checkpoint, the border of another region, until, completely liberated, he reaches the celestial region, where he will merge with the Source of eternal life.
