We advance on the long road of life surrounded by all kinds …

We advance on the long road of life surrounded by all kinds of dangers, and we never know what might happen to us. But whatever the dangers, it is crucial we learn to master our fear. Fear paralyses reflection; it causes the body to act in a wild and reckless fashion when faced with a real or imaginary danger. So if something frightens you, begin by remaining completely still for a few seconds, and take some deep breaths until you regain control of your heart, nervous system and limbs. If you allow your limbs to become agitated, you will lose all control over them, just as if you had opened the door of a cage containing wild animals: once they have escaped it is very difficult to get them to go back in. But if, instead, you replace this agitation with other responses, you will regain your inner peace, order will be restored and you will be able to act effectively.
