How many times have people said to me, ‘You speak of the kingdom of God and universal brotherhood, but in today’s world, these are utopian ideals that are impossible to achieve.’ No, it is not impossible. It is difficult, because humans are not really prepared to relinquish their own inferior personal satisfactions in order to devote themselves to the realization of a divine ideal, but it is not impossible. Instead of always judging everything according to the ways of the earth, we need to study the ways of heaven and learn how to realize them here below. Once Christians start taking Jesus’ words in the Lord’s Prayer seriously – ‘Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’ – everything can change. Mumbling this prayer as people have done for the past two thousand years does not suffice. They mindlessly repeat, ‘Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’, and then blithely continue to obey their own self-centred, unenlightened human will. When will we finally understand and decide to work for the realization of the divine Will?
