You are following a spiritual teaching: you will make great discoveries and it will bring you a great deal of joy, but it will not spare you life’s difficulties. Whatever path you take, good or bad, you encounter obstacles and ordeals. The obstacles and ordeals aren’t the same, and you experience them differently, that’s all. Weakness is one of the great dangers that threaten disciples. Because they have chosen the path of light, they imagine their progress will be a bed of roses, everything will be easy and wonderful… and then they receive unexpected shocks, which they don’t understand, and that makes them vulnerable. So, from now on, tell yourself beforehand that you will have to go through ordeals, that people may be ill-intentioned, malicious and ungrateful, and prepare yourself for the worst. When ordeals arrive, in so far as you have foreseen them you will remain firm, unshakeable, you will not experience disappointment, you won’t even notice that someone has wronged you! And in that way you will become capable of helping others too.
