God is often compared to fire, but most people do not know much about this fire except that it is so intense that it is impossible to bear. It is the fire of the pure Spirit; at its touch, all forms dissolve and disappear. Those who receive the kiss of this fire melt and become one with its flame. A great many spiritualists have written complicated books about the experience of mystics but the reality is quite simple. The experience of mystics is the experience of fire, of the sacred fire that burns within them and which they feed with pieces of their own lower nature, exactly as we feed a furnace with pieces of dead wood. Watch a log fire burning: all the separate, scattered pieces of wood are united and made one in the light and heat of the fire and are obliged to think and feel as the fire thinks and feels.
