The lower nature within us is a legacy from the animal kingdom; and if this nature is selfish, nasty and cruel, it is because it has survived in very difficult conditions. Just consider everything animals have to contend with to find their food, keep a shelter or protect themselves from other animals! After living in such conditions, how can you now expect this primitive nature to be generous and unselfish? No, in order to survive, it had to show aggressiveness and possessiveness, and now these characteristics are perfectly manifested. The lower nature has thus the right to find itself a place in the sun, and it accomplishes that task perfectly. But this does not represent the last stage in human development. It is time now for the spirit to manifest its qualities, and thanks to it, a balance will be found between the forces of instinct and of reason. In other words, the lower nature will become food for the higher nature, which will benefit from its richness: this will be the fullness of life.
