In the Emerald Tablet, Hermes Trismegistus says, ‘You will …

In the Emerald Tablet, Hermes Trismegistus says, ‘You will separate the subtle from the gross with great ingenuity’. Why separate them? And what do we do once they are separate? If we apply this advice to our psychic life, we understand we must sever all our inner connections with everything that is coarse, dull and dark, so we can connect to everything that is subtle and luminous. Moving away from something always implies moving closer to something else. If you distance yourself from good, you come closer to evil; if you distance yourself from the light, you draw closer to the dark; if you sever your connection with cosmic Intelligence, as certain so-called philosophers and scientists do, you connect with absurdity. Students of alchemy have perhaps not considered this particular interpretation of Hermes Trismegistus’ words. ‘You will separate the subtle from the gross…’ You must understand that this process does not end with that one movement of separation. When you separate one thing from another, you automatically bring it closer to a third thing. And the same applies to beings.
