Daily Meditation: Monday, December 4, 2006

You are in the street, and suddenly you think of something …

You are in the street, and suddenly you think of something very important you must tell a friend. So you enter a telephone box, and, so that you have privacy and are not bothered by the noise, you close the door. Or you want to pray, to address the Lord… But this is more difficult, because in order to have silence, the place you must enter is within you. Once you have entered, you must also close the door behind you. To close the door means to prevent any preoccupations, thoughts and desires that are foreign to your prayers from gaining access to you. Only then can you make contact with the Lord and hear his response. This is why Jesus said: ‘Whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in the secret place…’ We all must learn to close the doors within us.
