Love - keep a little distance in your love to live a poetic existence
A young boy and girl begin to fall in love. They meet from time to time, they write to each other and exchange little gifts—a lock of hair, the tiniest flower, the petal of a rose—which to them are like talismans suffused with an ocean of emanations, and they feel happy, vibrant and inspired. The boy becomes a valiant knight, a prince, and the girl, Sleeping Beauty. They live a poetic existence, taking walks together, gazing into one another’s eyes, and exulting in all the beauty around them. Theirs is a pure and ideal love. However, the day they feel they want to live out their love in a more physical way, the poetry vanishes and is replaced by prose. You may say, ‘But we can’t always remain in the ideal world!’ Well, that is your opinion. If you want to descend to a lower level, fine, go ahead, but you will be leaving the realm of true poetry and true beauty, and your joy will be greatly diminished. So, as much as you can, try to keep a little distance in your love, for it is precisely this distance that will fulfil and inspire you. Thanks to this distance, your love can be a lasting one.*
