‘It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, …

‘It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles… What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles.’ If we want to understand Jesus’ words, we must refer to what initiatic Science reveals about the human being and his different bodies: physical, astral, mental, causal, buddhic and atmic. The astral body is the seat of emotion, of feelings and desires, and it is represented in us by what we call the heart. What comes out of our mouth originates in the heart, and it is this that defiles us if we have not learned to purify our astral body. The mouth in question here is obviously the astral mouth. Nothing material comes out of our physical mouth, which only ingests and swallows. On the other hand, many things come out through the astral mouth, since feelings, emotions and desires are expressed through it, and when they are inspired by our lower nature we are defiled. Before defiling others, we defile ourselves.
