Human beings are inhabited by an age-old instinct driving …

Human beings are inhabited by an age-old instinct driving them to give free rein to their impulses, however base these may be. Over the years they have felt the need for some moral rules, not from a true need to live moral lives, however, but because they have found it to be in their best interest. Indeed if theft and any kind of aggression are prohibited and punished then life is far safer for everyone. But this ‘moral life' is far from being perfect because human beings continue to try and live their lives at the expense of others. They even go so far as to seek to eliminate them all together. This may not always be on the physical plane – because they risk being caught and punished – but on other planes where it is not so obvious. They steel other people's thoughts, they steel their feelings, or even destroy them with what they say and write. So the same instincts basically manifest themselves and the same crimes are committed, but in more subtle forms and spheres. So long as human beings are not instructed in initiatic science and so learn to give their instincts a spiritual direction, all their lower impulses will remain destructive forces, which will succeed in finding their own way.
