You have all had the experience of visiting a large …

You have all had the experience of visiting a large department store and riding the automatic escalators. When you approach the escalator it is still, but as soon as you place your foot on the first step it immediately goes into operation and transports you to a higher or lower floor. How does this work? By placing your foot on the step you simply cut a beam of light, and this is sufficient to trigger mechanisms that activate this huge escalator and all of its weight. The same process exists in our inner life. Every thought, every feeling that runs through us cuts a beam somewhere, and certain mechanisms within us begin to operate. And if instead of rising you begin to hurtle towards hell, it is because your thoughts and feelings have set off the downward escalators. Do not imagine you can nurture any thought or feeling whatsoever without provoking changes in you. Depending on the nature of your thoughts and feelings, movements are triggered which will ultimately project you either towards the heights or down to the depths.
