How many people truly reflect on the significance of their sojourn here on earth? How many ask themselves what they are doing here, why they are here? Most behave as if they were on earth to satisfy all their whims, their desires, and to pass the time in the most pleasant conditions possible. Very few are aware that they should consider these few decades of life they have been given as a training, an apprenticeship. And during this training heaven asks them to learn and to improve themselves, in other words to work on their character, because this is the only thing they will keep and take with them into the other world. They will leave behind all their material and even intellectual possessions, and if they have not worked on their inner selves, they will then present themselves miserable, poor, and naked before the heavenly spirits above. In an initiatic school disciples learn to work on qualities which will remain their property eternally, and when they return to earth in another incarnation heaven will give them better conditions and more effective means to continue their work.
