An instructor’s competence and good disposition are only half what is needed if he is to succeed in communicating his knowledge. It is up to the students or disciples to provide the other half, by being receptive and enthusiastic. You could say that the student or disciple is the heart, which opens to receive the knowledge of the instructor, the intellect. And this knowledge will also eventually reach the intellect of the disciple. The heart, therefore, is the antechamber of the intellect, and we must first win the heart if we are to make contact with the intellect. When we go for an interview with an important person, we expect to be introduced by his secretary. In the same way, if we want an interview with wisdom, we must be introduced by love. Only those who open their hearts approach the great mysteries.
