We find the effervescence of desires and passions wherever …

We find the effervescence of desires and passions wherever there are human beings. But what is rare and almost non-existent in human beings is the intelligence that weighs, classifies, compares and makes choices. Unfortunately, humans want none of this most precious intelligence. They say to themselves: ‘If we always have to put intelligence and reason first, we will have to give up certain pleasures and try to stay clearheaded and in control of ourselves, and we have no desire to do this.’ When people say such things, they are admitting they are blind and narrow-minded, for they would actually be happier if they were lucid enough to discern the nature of their desires and impulses and make reasoned choices. How can they prefer blindness over lucidity? Since they cannot see anything, they make no provisions to protect themselves, and they are exposed to every danger.
