Nothing creates so many conflicts among human beings as disagreements about ideas. People are ready to accept one another's weaknesses and defects, but as soon as their political, philosophical, or religious ideas diverge and oppose each other, it is war! How many people are capable of sacrificing their blood or that of others simply so their opinions may triumph! Study history: how many exceptional beings have been despised or even persecuted by their contemporaries for the sole reason that they differed in their points of view. Their heads were chopped off as if they were common thieves, with no consideration for their wisdom and moral worth. It is pride that blinds human beings to the virtues of a person whose opinion they want to attack. Pride incites people to rise up against one another, whereas humility, a state in which we recognise that we are not the only ones in the right, restores harmony.
