Humans cannot be asked to suddenly abandon the physical, external forms of their religion in order to worship God ‘in spirit and truth’. The fulfilment of Jesus’ prophecy is approaching, and for some people it has already long been fulfilled. But we must understand that it’s impossible for such a change to take place overnight for the entire world. When it’s a matter of physical, material facts, everyone experiences them at the same time. For example, once an ecumenical council has decreed that the mass will no longer be said in Latin from such and such a date, in effect, from that date onwards all Catholics notice the change. But when Jesus says, ‘The hour is coming when the true worshippers will worship God in spirit and truth’, he is speaking of a phenomenon of the inner life that can only be fulfilled according to each person’s degree of evolution.
