People tend to think that spirit and matter work against …

People tend to think that spirit and matter work against each other, but in reality they are constantly moving towards each other. Spirit descends towards matter, and matter ascends towards spirit. This is why human beings, who represent matter through the bonds tying them to the physical plane, must pursue the spirit, their own spirit, God. A river that descends from the mountain summit has the right to divide into smaller tributaries to irrigate the land it crosses. And the sun, too, has the right to distribute its rays throughout space to nourish the life of the entire solar system. But we are here below, and instead of scattering our energies we must direct our whole being towards the centre, towards the summit, so that we’re able to receive its life and force. One day perhaps, we too will have the right to become dispersed, like a river and like the sun, but only when we have become alive like them. When that happens, we shall be able to project our life, the life of the spirit, onto all creatures.
