Style is what counts most in the eyes of many people, and …

Style is what counts most in the eyes of many people, and it is what they most appreciate in books. It doesn’t matter that the subject matter is completely run of the mill, vulgar or even scandalous, or that the writer flouts all moral principles. What is important is style. If its style is new and original, we are supposed to marvel before this masterpiece! But why have people become so obsessed? What would they say if they were given a package wrapped in silk paper and magnificent ribbons, and upon opening it they found that it was it empty… or that it contained refuse, or poison, or an asphyxiating gas? It is important to have a suitable box, an attractive presentation, a beautiful wrapping, but the object within must always have more value and beauty than its envelope. The form is there only as protection, to keep the contents intact, not to draw so much attention to itself that the contents are forgotten.
