As soon as hostilities cease between warring factions, we hear people speak of ‘unity’. Otherwise this notion is quite neglected. People expect that if unity is to be created, there must be enemies somewhere to fight. No, this is not unity in the true sense. True unity does not fight anyone or exclude anyone, quite the opposite. He who works to rise by means of thought all the way to the summit, to this unity, begins to sense that all human beings are connected. And it is true: we all form a unity on high in the divine world, for not only are we each a cell in the great cosmic body, but the small cell that we are is also a microcosm of this body as a whole. It is a serious mistake to believe that since others exist outside of us we will not suffer as a result of the harm we can do to them. When we do harm to others, we do harm to ourselves as well, even if we do not realize it at the time.
