Technical progress has made life more comfortable, but be …

Technical progress has made life more comfortable, but be wary of comfort. You will perhaps not like this idea, but the truth is comfort paralyses intelligence, whereas the lack of comfort stimulates it; it stimulates the need to create. Most of humanity’s great masterpieces have been created in discomfort. ‘And isn’t anyone creating masterpieces anymore?’ you will ask. Of course they are, only the masterpieces in our times are no longer masterpieces of art or philosophy but extremely sophisticated machines and appliances, masterpieces of technology. These machines and appliances are the most remarkable achievements of our time, and it’s true, you can’t help but admire them. But these laudable achievements are in the process of paralysing and chloroforming human beings. We are on earth in order to develop. And developing ourselves means exercising the power of spirit over matter: not only the matter outside us but especially that within us. And we will only know how to control external matter intelligently when we have learnt to control our inner matter; otherwise we will be crushed.
