Respiration and nutrition have many points in common and are governed by the same laws. Just as it is not good to swallow food without chewing it, neither is it good to breathe rapidly without allowing the air time to reach the bottom of the lungs, to fill and expand them. You must breathe slowly and deeply and even hold the air in your lungs for a few seconds from time to time. Why? So you can ‘chew’ it. Yes, the lungs know how to chew air just as the mouth knows how to chew food. The air we take in is like a mouthful of food, a mouthful replete with extraordinary forces. If we expel it too quickly, the lungs cannot ‘cook’ it, ‘digest’ it or assimilate it sufficiently for the body to benefit from the energy it contains. This explains why so many people are tired, nervous and irritable: they have not learned to nourish themselves with air. Instead of ‘chewing’ it, they expel it too quickly. Deep breathing is a wonderful exercise, and you must remember to practise it.
