How are we to understand the words Jesus spoke during the last meal he took with his disciples? He blessed the bread and the wine and gave it to them, saying, ‘Eat, this is my body. Drink, this is my blood… Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life.’ Bread and wine were already known and used as symbols well before Jesus. They sum up the whole of initiatic Science, which is the science of the two great cosmic principles: the masculine principle, symbolized by bread, and the feminine principle, symbolized by wine. These two principles work together in all parts of the universe. And if you go deeper into their meaning, you discover that bread and wine are two solar symbols. You must see beyond the physical bread and wine to the two properties of the sun: its warmth and light. The warmth of the spiritual sun is love, and its light, wisdom. So what Jesus meant was, ‘Those who eat wisdom and drink love have eternal life.’
