The day you succeed in nourishing yourself with the scent …

The day you succeed in nourishing yourself with the scent of flowers without picking them, without putting them in your buttonhole, you will have made great progress. The flower you picked is already dead. God had put this flower in His garden; it was radiant and you wanted to put it in your buttonhole so that everyone could see the flower belonged to you. There was no need to pick it. You should have been content with being able to enjoy its scent. Of course this image is purely symbolic. The flowers are human beings and the scent is what emanates from their good thoughts and their good feelings. No-one will criticize you for wanting to enjoy this scent; it is there for everyone to smell and in particular for those who are able to appreciate it. If, however, you want to cut the flower to take it away with you, heaven will blame you for making the flower wilt and die. It was planted in God's soil; why must you uproot it?
