People’s inadequacies and imperfections do not arise from their spirit being deficient. The deficiencies come from the physical instruments the spirit has to manifest itself through, and one of these special instruments is obviously the brain. When you meet someone who is mentally handicapped, be aware it’s not their spirit that’s weak – their spirit may be that of a very great sage; it’s their brain, the physical instrument through which they must express themselves, that’s in a dilapidated state. Give a violin with slack strings to a violinist: even if they are the greatest virtuoso in the world, they won’t be able to play it. The spirit is also a great virtuoso, but it needs a good instrument to play. People expect too much from the spirit: they give it a derelict body and expect it to perform miracles. But no, it cannot. And to use another image, it’s as though you wanted to strike a light from a damp match; it’s impossible.
