So many people declare themselves rationalists, but what …

So many people declare themselves rationalists, but what place do they actually give to reason? When one sees how they give reign to their instincts and passions in their everyday lives, one wonders where this reason is hiding. And yet they accept these inferior impulses; they even seem to find them quite natural. Whereas the superior impulses inspired by faith in a sublime Entity who created heaven and earth, the feelings of trust, gratitude, love, and adoration for that Being, they view as ridiculous. Reason is very useful when it comes to ordering the inner self. Let us say that it must do our housework...Yes, it must clean the house, not empty it. When you do housework, you move furniture and other objects in order to vacuum or dust, but then you put them back where they belong; you do not throw them out of the window. And within yourselves as well, if you call on reason to do your housework, it is not to rid you of genuine religious sentiments, but, to throw out your false beliefs once and for all and allow the feelings of respect and adoration to manifest in all their splendour.
