‘For we hold that a man is justified by faith apart from works proscribed by the law’, wrote St. Paul in his letter to the Romans. In fact, we are saved neither by faith nor by works alone, because the two cannot be separated. Our faith is useless if we do not act in harmony with it, but how can we act as we should if we do not first have a creed, an ideal? The two are linked. True religion allows no separation between what we believe and how we conduct ourselves. The human being is a unity, and he must not agree to any contradiction in his life. We cannot demand perfection of him, of course, but this does not excuse him from working to improve his ways, from vivifying within himself the image of God in which he was created.
