Matter is of divine origin. Its true roots, which are on high, very close to God, are the four holy animals, the Seraphim. But at this level of purity and subtlety, matter is unknowable and inconceivable, for it is one with the spirit. However, since discoveries in physics reveal matter of greater and greater subtlety, perhaps physicists will eventually develop instruments capable of observing the structure and movements of etheric matter. As for astral and mental matter, it will remain forever beyond the reach of our instruments. All we can do is work with it, and in fact every one of us does work with this matter, but unconsciously. Our thoughts, feelings and inner states are material processes, but so subtle that the movements of matter they produce remain imperceptible.
