Do not always take justice as a rule of conduct. Always …

Do not always take justice as a rule of conduct. Always give more than you have to, and forgive those who have done you harm. This is how you will win friends. Justice was useful in an era when people could not yet accept the teaching of love. The Old Testament speaks only of justice: ‘eye for eye, tooth for tooth’. But if we continue to act in this way today, we stand to lose a great deal, for it will always be justice that we meet. On the other hand, if we work according to the law of love, it is love that will come to pay us a visit. The law of justice is necessary as a foundation for morality, but it is not sufficient for the establishment on earth of the kingdom of God… ‘and his justice’, this divine justice which is not the justice of human beings. Love is always greater than justice.
