Likes and dislikes - instinctive tendencies that must be controlled

Humans have a natural tendency to seek the easy life, and this is also shown in their relations with others. Those who analyse themselves honestly will find that they are driven by their likes and dislikes, without asking themselves whether the spontaneous, instinctual tendency to like or dislike can be considered a good criterion for judging. Look at how many people who have no morals seem at first so much more likable than honest, virtuous people! So the former are sought out and the latter avoided. Likes and dislikes are a question of temperament, and it is pointless asking someone to change their temperament; it’s impossible. But it is within their power to make the effort to rise to the realms of the soul and spirit to become imbued with the fragrance and energies of divine love. Once they are filled with this ever-present love, they no longer let themselves be guided by their attractions and repulsions. They see life in a different way, and whatever their feelings for people, they allow them to benefit from the light they themselves have received from above.
