The greatness and true powerfulness of a person lies not in …

The greatness and true powerfulness of a person lies not in the powers they obtain but in the fact that they refrain from using them for self-interest. Those who make use of magical practices to obtain love, glory, power or money, or to get rid of an enemy, are actually using black magic; whatever they manage to gain in this way will one day backfire on them, and they will lose everything. True magic, divine magic, consists in using all one’s faculties, all one’s knowledge, to bring about the kingdom of God in oneself and in others. Very few mages reach this higher level, where they are no longer even interested in the magic itself, where they no longer even perform acts of magic, where they stop wanting to control spirits to satisfy whatever personal ambitions they have, and where their only objective is to work with and for the light. Those who achieve this are theurges, that is, beings who practise divine magic. Their work is entirely disinterested, and they are benefactors of humanity.
