Every particle of matter possesses energy. This energy is the masculine principle, whereas the particle of matter represents the feminine principle. As our physical body is matter, it also possesses an energy, and this energy we call the soul, a word meaning ‘that which animates' – in Latin ‘anima'. But the human being is in fact made up of several bodies, each of which has a soul: in the physical body it is the instinctive soul, in the astral body it is the emotional soul, in the mental body it is the intellectual soul, and above these the causal, buddhic, and atmic bodies each have a soul, which the cabbalists call Neshamah, Hayah, and Iehida. Each body is animated by a soul: the body is the container and the soul is the content, and the two are inseparable. Nature herself, the cosmos, is a body, the body of God, and this body also possesses a soul: the universal soul that fills the body of God with her quintessence. Initiatic science is very clear about all this: there are as many souls as there are bodies.
