Matter is characterised by inertia, whereas the spirit is …

Matter is characterised by inertia, whereas the spirit is characterised by impulsion. The human being, who is both matter and spirit, is influenced by both: he is animated by the spirit, whereas matter seeks to engulf him and draw him back to a state of non-differentiation. He must constantly monitor himself and maintain his inner activity, so that the currents continue to circulate. If he allows himself to be overtaken by inertia, he becomes a swamp. And this is what happens to those who do no real mental and spiritual work: they become foul-smelling swamps, infested with mosquitoes, toads, and frogs. Whereas those who are enlightened not only take care never to block the spirit, but they open all doors to it. And the spirit, which is then king, begins to pacify, harmonise, vivify, and illuminate everything within them.
