If we reduce religion to precepts which we are to accept independently of the experience and actions which should go along with them, we separate religion from faith, leaving nothing but beliefs which will save no one. The lazy are never saved. What results can we expect when there is no inner work, no effort or experimentation? It is said in the Gospels that faith can move mountains. But as long as believers repeat formulas, gestures and rituals without understanding their meaning and purpose, their faith will neither move mountains nor work miracles. When I speak of miracles, it is not a question of curing the sick or bringing the dead back to life, but of our own transformation and healing, our own resurrection.
