The disciples of a spiritual teaching learn to detach themselves from interests that are overly material, so that they are free to devote more and more time to prayer and meditation. But many of them are not yet ready for this detachment, and it should not take place prematurely. If you can imagine, some people decide to abandon their commitments to family or profession, on the pretext that they are entering into the service of God. In reality, this is not the way to go about it, and it is actually better for some if they have very little freedom, because freedom only gives them the opportunity to do stupid things. Since not everyone is capable of making good use of his freedom, it is better for some to have obligations to family and work which require a great deal of their attention, energy and time. When a narrow-minded, fanatical disciple drops his responsibilities, allegedly in response to a call from the Lord, it is disastrous, and he will do nothing but harm.
