There is a relationship between the four elements – earth, water, air and fire – and the different kingdoms of nature. Minerals correspond to earth, vegetables to water, animals to air, and human beings to fire. And since each of these kingdoms is a hierarchy, we can say that in the mineral kingdom, precious stones are at the summit; in the vegetable kingdom it is flowers; in the animal kingdom it is birds, and in human beings it is the initiates. In a certain sense, precious stones, flowers, birds and initiates represent the quintessence of the four elements. And even beyond fire, in the region known as ether, the angelic orders live and work – an entire scale of beings who ascend and descend between earth and heaven, with God at the summit. It is this ladder with angels ascending and descending that Jacob saw in a dream.
