You will not find happiness in pleasure, but in work. Does …

You will not find happiness in pleasure, but in work. Does this surprise you? Then it proves that you have not yet understood what real work is, otherwise you would know that only in such work will you find happiness. It is not a question of depriving yourself of pleasure, but simply of not putting pleasure first or making it the goal of your existence, because it weakens and impoverishes you as all the emotions and sensations you experience gradually burn up your reserves. Instead of making pleasure your goal in life, you must say to yourself, ‘Ah, I must do something sensible, useful and noble with my life’, and then replace pleasure with work. To replace pleasure with work is to replace an ordinary, self-centered activity with one that is more noble and generous, one that expands your consciousness and opens new possibilities within you.
